Acupuncture -- Scientific Research Abstracts and Articles top
Since the establishment in 1991 of the Office of Alternative Medicine, National Institutes for Health a growing number of clinical trials have focused on complimentary therapies, including acupuncture. Results have varied, but show a positive trend toward confirming the efficacy of acupuncture for a variety of conditions. Links to some of these results are included below.
Researchers have yet to overcome difficulties inherent to the scientific study of acupuncture. One major obstacle has been design of a convincing acupuncture placebo. Another shortcoming is that treatments used in research are often over-simplified and scarcely resemble real treatments applied in clinical practice. In addition, most trials focus exclusively on acupuncture. They ignore the equally important contributions of herbal therapy, moxibustion, cupping and dietary, exercise and lifestyle recommendations often used in conjunction with acupuncture.
While the abstracts and articles below provide an embryonic scientific view of acupuncture, they do not represent all the conditions acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have effectively treated for several thousand years of Chinese history.
